Why AI Will Never Match Human Creativity

Artificial intelligence is evolving rapidly. It has begun to take positions in our businesses, our vehicles and even our homes. AI is defined as the development of computer systems able to perform tasks that normally would require a human brain. We come in contact with AI when we call helplines, talk to Siri, ask Alexa to set a timer and while we’re browsing social media. It’s being used to learn our likes, dislikes and help us function from day to day. As AI integration grows so does concern over job loss. Some reports claim that AI will take over more and more jobs as it progresses, and others claim they will never surpass the need for human interaction. AI is currently taking over tedious, mundane jobs that humans never wanted to do in the first place. Recently, AI has even begun to creep into creative fields, a field that seemed safe from AI because of the nature of creating art. This poses the question, “How far will AI evolve?” Artificial Intelligence is the simulation of the human brain. The key word being ‘simulation’. Even with AI becoming relevant in art, it is still very limited on its ability to create.

AI IN CREATIVITY

“AI Artists” have been slowly emerging over the last couple of years. They have popped up in visuals, music, poetry and movies. This has caused a spark of debate on whether or not AI creativity will not only match, but surpass human creativity in the future. This year, the first drawing robot artist made her debut. Her name is Ai-Da. She is able to draw, paint and sculpt and was showcased at Oxford University this summer.

Google’s PoemPortraits has created a program that generates a poem based on a single word that you input. It was built using an algorithm deeply based on over 20 million words of 19th century poetry. It then adds its poem to a collective poem built by poems of other users. It also gives you the choice to use a picture of yourself as part of the “art”. The poems can be meaningful at times, but also can make no sense at all.

Along with strict AI art, there are collaborative works as well between AI and human intelligence. An AI artist called AICAN, and its creator Ahmed Elgammal, showed two series of canvas works portraying faceless portraits. The system was presented with 100,000 photos of Western art from over five centuries. It then drew from this historical knowledge to create something new to create the artwork without the help of an actual human artist.

While each of these are impressive, it still takes actual human creativity to let AI “create” on its own. All of this work was created by using past artwork created by humans, based on human emotion and consciousness. It is doubtful AI can ever replace the true creativity the human brain can. It also shows that AI creativity can be used as inspiration and to improve the work of human artists, whether it’s a collaboration or behind the scenes.

HOW AI IS CHANGING CREATIVITY WORKFLOW

While AI may never actually create art, it doesn’t mean it can’t evolve to help change the way creatives work and businesses run. Creatives that run businesses spend more time with mundane, admin tasks than actually creating. AI programs are making it possible to make jobs become more efficient and accurate. These programs are not meant to takeover jobs, but made to grow businesses and make jobs easier. It can find holes where things need to be fixed and suggest solutions.

Positives of AI

  • Can take over the tedious tasks
  • Free up more time for creatives- to be creative
  • Can collect data to see where efficiency can be improved

In contact centers, it is especially crucial to collect data to improve employee and customer experience. Artificial intelligence could help customer service operations stay on top of the latest support trends because it uses machine learning to constantly improve its knowledge based on previous outcomes; the more it learns, the more accurate it is. It could be a powerful resource for improving agent efficiency and engagement.

Aceyus Intelligence is a Suite of Solutions designed to optimize contact center operations through world-class reporting, contact treatment management, data collection and data transformation solutions. WHY IT WILL NEVER REPLACE HUMAN CREATIVITY

Neural net is a certain type of AI that simulates creativity. Anton Oleinik, a sociology professor at Memorial University of Newfoundland published an article explaining why AI will never outperform humans in creativity. There are multiple reasons on why neural nets are terrible at being creative, the first being their inability to recognize when a pattern will change. Neural nets are built to learn algorithms by absorbing a vast amount of information and identifying every pattern in that data. They come up short when it comes to matching one pattern to a different pattern and anticipating when the pattern will change direction. Another big reason Oleinik recognizes is the fact that neural nets lack social intelligence. “Innovations are often embedded in social connections and relationships,” Oleinik writes. They are unable to see beyond the specific data set and its purpose. “Creativity is hardly possible without one’s capacity to think metaphorically, to coordinate proactively and to make predictions that go beyond simple extrapolation,” Oleinik says.

At the end of the day human consciousness is what sets us apart from AI. AI will never be conscious and therefore it will never have the innovative thinking and spontaneous thoughts that change the direction of art. Artificial intelligence mimics creativity to create art from previous work. It works off of other people’s data. It does not have the capability to read human emotions and create demanded art based on social norms. Consciousness and human emotion is why AI will never match human creativity.
